The TEALs in LongBeach

Here is a word of advise NEVER EVER go to Magic Mountain one of the scarest Theme parks in the world and ride every single scary ride possible the day before the LARGEST hair show on the west coast. Because if you happen to be Teaching four classes the next day the Screaming like a Banshee or a Small child however you want to describe it might be tough on the voice.

On January 28th Every one at TEAL Salon thought it would be a good idea to take the 1 hour and 15 min ride out to Magic Mountain, from the Long Beach airport, all along the I405 which in itself is a roller coaster ride. Magic Mountain is known to have the most thrill rides in the country, and for those of you who don’t know I turn into a child I want to ride every single ride in the park, and I will wine if you slow me down. From the first ride we  took “THE GOLIATH” I Knew my voice was going to be SHOT. Eight hours later and absolutly no voice left we decided to go back to the convention center and get ready for the weekend.

Our First Show was with the Exceptional STEVE ELIAS where we spent the first half of the class discussing WHY hairdressers should take pictures of there work, from an artistic stand point. The second half of the class Steve and DeAnnalyn Dressed models, While  I fielded questions. Steve showed off his mastery of Session work by Rocking Brilliant 40’s Bombshell looks, While DeAnnalyn demonstrated her skill at “changing the look” by altering 2 models hair 7 times in 15 min. 404958_2916159417621_1069776115_2839486_1991812310_n

Our next class is one of my favorites titled “Special Operations” This class explores the art of avant garde wig making and dissects every wig or hairpiece we have ever made. We than led the students in a hands on wig making class that every one was able to create a piece of art. This is the only only class at a hairshow that the supplies list calls for dry wall sand paper, needle and tread, glue sticks and an old clothes Iron.

On Monday our first class was 420464_3077376463981_1550834643_32805511_1758708762_nDe-Mystifying Long Hairdressing which is the introductory to the TEALs Long Hair Dressing Method. This class is about teaching the technique of long hair dressing, it doesn’t teach one specific look. Our Idea is that hairdressers should learn how to dress hair not Just do one look. The two highlights of this class is that It was the release of our New Book The TEAL Long Hairdressing Method, and that our daughter Tuesday was on stage by herself at one point and led a portion of the class. 404947_2913755277519_1069776115_2838185_112626087_n

The very last class we did was a business class highlighting the importance of Customer Service in this tough economy. The 7 Steps of Outstanding Customer Service challenges the traditional ideas of how a salon should run discussing the idea that why does every hair salon HAVE TO WERE BLACK, as well as where and what should we the salon of the reccession generation Advertise. I have to say that this class was the one that i was most worried about, “because why should a business person or a manager want to listen to me?” and “Who Would Show up?”  Well as it turns out we had an incredible group with everyone sharing there ideas we even added some ideas to our customer service as well.

What a great way to spend a weekend. Wait till you see what we do next.

The TEALs In Columbus

November 8th, 2011

Premier Beauty Classic

Columbus, Ohio

October 24th and 25th

d-and-r-in-columbus-1

On October 24th and 25th  DeAnnalyn and I had one of the most successful and stressful hair shows in our career. So usually when you do a hair show you fly in 1 to 2 days in advance for a Model call and Model Prep, to look for and polish up any models you will need for the show. Well from Portland to Columbus there is only one flight that leaves per day. and it is close to a 9 hour trip. We should have left on Friday so we could have had our bearings, had a model call on Saturday morning and set up our Booth. Well because we were super busy at the salon on Friday and there is never a guarantee on how much money you will make at these hair shows DeAnnalyn and I decided to leave Saturday Afternoon. Which meant we would be taking a red eye in to Columbus Leaving Saturday  and landing Sunday Morning, Giving us just enough time to prep…NOT.

d-columbus1We arrived at the Columbus Convention Center at 6 am that is 3 am Oregon Time. It was funny the people checking us in even mentioned that they got nervous that we were going to be a no show. Anyhow De and I have our booth set up down to 20 min flat so we were done setting up in no time  and we were sitting around waiting for our Booth and Class Support to show up. Booth and class support is really just warm bodies that could sit behind the booth so it wouldn’t look empty when De or I couldn’t be there (we had 2  hour long shows per day scheduled which meant our booth would need to be manned a total of 3 hours per day). Well the first thing that happens is two of our 3 support staff couldn’t make it so it would just be one person all day.  What do we expect we were not paying anyone anyways. Secondly We had no Models scouted or prepped which meant that someone was going to have to scout the models before the show. I decided to leave that one up to De, because she looks less intimidating then me.

Anyhow I am always surprised when anyone shows up to any of our classes, I mean who wants to see us anyways right. Also what DeAnnalyn and I specialize in is Long Hair Dressing, which no one really cares about because it is not hair cutting or color. Well our first class of 100 seats sold out completely to the point that there was about 50 people along the walls and the seated in the Aisle’s. I just knew the fire Marshall was going to shut us down. The second class had a waiting list of another 50 people and another 50 people sneaking in.

The second day our show support decided he would not be able to show up so it was left to just DeAnnalyn and myself. Needless to say we made itr-columbus work, but we also finished the show off with two more sold out shows and we sold out of all of our tools, combs and brushes that we brought, and we sold quite a few of our DVDs.

In all it was a huge learning experience for us and a lot of fun.

Ask The Experts

Pony Appeal

Q: Are ponytails chic enough to wear to work, or are they too girlie?

A: Absolutely! In fact, they’ve blossomed into a whole array of styles that are completely work-freandly. Do avoid the overly exaggerated pouf in front- otherwise, anything goes. They’re great with super-sleek hair for a polished look; or, volumized, even slightly curled hair can add a curvy, playful finish. To keep things fresh, consider adding a few braids into the mix, either before you sweep it all back or using the length. You can even bend, twist or sweep braided length into another style or wrap it around the base of the original pony tail for a textured bun.

Color Conundrum

Q: I have had hair color for the past several years. I likethe shade, but my hair is extremly dry. What can i do to add moisture or should i stop getting color altogether?

A: Unless you are over processing by bleaching your hair, I don’t recommend that you stop with the color, especially if you are otherwise happy with the result. Professional hair color products should leave hair looking shiny and healthy. Instead, treat your hair with a series of deep-conditioning treatments about once a week. Your stylist or colorist should be able to choose the right one for your hair condition or even apply one at the salon.

Tress to Thrill

Q: I recently cut my hair into a jaw-length bob with bangs. i like the way it looks, but I’m wondering how to wear it when i want to dress it up, Any suggestions?

A: A classic way to dress up your bob is to slick it back. Liberally apply gel and distribute it evenly through your hair. Run a fine-tooth comb through strands, directing them all back and close to the head, and tucking the behind the ears. A pin curl set all over or even just around the bottom can also be fun. Apply a medium-hold gel on wet hair and comb through to distribute well. Take a section of hair and wrap it around your finger or fingers, depending how big you want the curls. Place your finger with the section of hair wrapped around it against your head and anchor the section with a bobby pin. wait until hair is completely dry, and then undo the pins. and finger-brush through the curls to lightly break them up.

Brushing Basics

Q: Is it true that it is bad to brush your hair when it is wet?

A: Yes and No- It’s always bad to brush your hair wet or dry if done incorrectly. Healthy hair can stretch quite far when wet and not incur damage but it’s never a good idea to yank or pull on your hair. I suggest using a detangler or even treatment oil on damp strands, than work slowly in small sections starting at the ends. Brush or comb in the direction that it grows and working through a bit at a time until you reach the roots. If you prefer a brush make sure its a good quality tool with no rough spots that can snag your hair. A wide toothed comb is definitely a better idea if you have curly, thick or coarse hair.

Day Old ‘Do

Q: How can i perk up second-day hair (The day between shampoos)? Should i shampoo everyday?

A: We actually don’t recommend shampooing everyday- every other day is really the best. On day one, try not to use too much product to began with- use  just enough to get your hair where you want it. Day two, perk up  your style with a small amount of moisture. either on your hands or with a squirt bottle, to reactivate the product already in your hair. style as needed or slightly alter your look as the occasion or mood suits you. If you find that you have oily roots after day one or want to spruce up your style, consider a dry shampoo. They work quite well.

Do Away with Dandruff

Q: I have dandruff, yet i’ve heard dandruff shampoos can be damaging. Is that trus, and if so, what do you recommend?

A: Flakes on your hair or on your scalp don’t always mean dandruff. First be sure that you are rinsing your hair well after shampooing and conditioning, as left over product  can tend to flake. Secondly, your skin may just be dry- It is skin after all, and skin needs moisturizing. If you try a dandruff shampoo and you only have dry scalp (vs dandruff) it make things drier. Try moisturizing your hair and scalp with a high end  deep moisturizing conditioner and then, if the condition persists, you may find that you actually have dandruff. Since dandruff is a medical condition i would suggest consulting with dermatologist. I can usually tell the difference between flakes or products, dry scalp, or dandruff because dandruff involves greasy scales and tends to have a distinctive scent.

Preventing a ‘Do Disaster

Tips from a pro

We’ve all left the salon with a haircut we hate, but there are ways to head off ‘do disaster. Ryan Teal of “TEAL Salon” (They had a mis-print.) in Portland, Or. offers these suggestions.

  • Insist on a consultation At Teal’s salon, stylists have a ten minute talk with new clients before they start cutting. “The Stylist should ask you about your life and background, what you do for fun and, if you every had a really bad and / or really good haircut, what they looked like,” he says.
  • Bring in Photos. Pictures will give you some direction, but remember that it’s not like picking a shirt out of a catalog. “A haircut is handmade and the stylist needs to talk to you about how to tailor it to work for you.”
  • Go Elsewhere if your not “clicking” during the consultation. The same goes for after the cut begins. The most obvious warning sign is when too much is being cut off. Teal says you should also be concerned if the stylist is jumping aroun d on your head as he/she cuts, especially at the begining, which can lead to holes. “If it is happening, i’d get out while you still have some hair.”

The TEAL’s in Modern Salon Magazine.com

This is an Article from Modern Salon Magazine. com called.

“Texture From the Teals”

Ryan and DeAnnalyn Teal are award winning stylists, educators and owners of Portland, Oregon’s Teal Salon. They love all things over the top—even “frizz,” a word they aren’t afraid to use. Clever techniques, like wrapping the hair around hairpins and tapping with a flat iron result in a look that is somewhat flat on top with an “explosion of frizz” through the length. Call it texture, if you prefer, but the effect is stunning by any name.texture-ryan-t-2-afterDolly Locks” was created using hairpieces sewn into a foot-long fall with backcombed synthetic hair braided and wadded in place.

hairdresser-of-the-year-ryan-t-21For this look, the Teals used the old-school technique of setting the hair on perm rods in a horizontal wrap. The hair was dried and tousled into a triangular shape with a tight chignon on top.

The Teals call this a “Textbook frizz” achieved by blow drying the length and brushing the ends out for a textured edge.
